Aloha everyone and especially Brian in this comment. Looks like we're on a similar path and I would love to coordinate our efforts. I took on starting up a task force for the Water group out of the Agricultural Forum and I'm starting to collect information pertaining to watershed councils, water laws (local, state, federal) and water statistical data including monitoring systems. It looks like we're not alone and I'm open to assisting anyone interested in this important area. I feel my main job right now is to respect others who are working in this area and assist in collecting information that we can organize and centralize for each other. Brian we've talked before in person, let's get together again and gather our energies. Aloha everyone and Mahalo

Aloha nui loa,

It's been sometime since I've last viewed this discussion. KRIS like databases are powerful to assimilate information, understand/identify what's happening (analysis) and use as a monitoring tool...

Every Ahu'pua'a can benefit from these database system. KRIS is especially designed for Watershed use and can be altered to make it more suitable for Hawaii.

I still have the software and am starting to compile all information that I can access even though the software isn't customized. Any information or documents, or leads can be sent to me at kauaibri@gmail.com I am also still in contact with the software developers and could check in with them.

Traditionally KRIS projects were funded with grant monies allocated for Environmental Resources (eg Endangered Species Act, USDA , forestry, USFWS, etc). I'm sure there are plenty of grant monies available to start a project or two on Kauai... Currently I am interested in Wainiha and Kalihiwai Ahu'pua'a's but not limited to them...

I am also starting to look at projects on the Big Island with Ahu'pua'a Restoration/ revitalization of not just the environmental resources, but bringing back the Kuleana system and structure... It's way past due...

Aloha,
Brian

Sustainable solutions,
KRIS is incredible! What an incredible resource! Thank you! I would like to ask if you mind sitting down to help us see about setting up a similar program for the Wailua Ahu pua'a?
Wailua valley and its off shore fishery is a perfect example of mauka-makai orientation of a classic ahu pu a’a which provided access to the full range of resources from the mountain to the sea.

Many do not realize, there are many Auwais-water courses that feed into Wailua River, including Opaeka'a stream and ancient fishponds. Many of these waterways are home to the o'opu (fish), opae (shrimp), hihi wai (fresh running water snail.

The Klamath Resource Information System is definately needed for every ahupua’a. I especially would like to identify certain areas to determine if chemical “run off" contamination is what is ruining the habitat of coastal Opihis and marine life, a source for the native Hawaiian diets and medicine.

And yes, it will be our responsibility to document, teach and pass on this information for future generations.

Kala mai- Please excuse! I didnt fully understand the “language” “cumulative effect”! Eventually I figure it out! This is a WONDERFUL
Discussion! MAHALO!
